For a sweet Holi

Its traditional verses contemporary ghujiya this Holi. The winner hands down is the home cooked and the ones closest to them. Sweet shops and bakeries in the city are offering a variety of options for the customers to take their pick.

Sample this: Cappuccino, honey-wafer-crust, coconut, orange, baby-meva, orange, navratan, chocolate, variety of baked… the list is endless.

“Modern avtaars chocolate, navratan, orange, dryfruit, toffee and baked ones are there but traditional ‘ghar-jaisi’ ones are order of the day. Customers do buy our navratan, toffee and other options but traditional gujiya is what we recommend and patrons buy most,” says Pankaj Gupta who runs 213year-old Ram Asrey sweet shop in Hazratganj.

The Madhurima Sweets in Gomti Nagar has 51 type gujiyas including a variety of baked ones ranging from Rs 600-45,000 a kg.

“Our one-bite baby meva guijiya is the fastest moving option as its handy and a small portion. Cappuccino, wafer, honey-crust and coconut are some of the new options. Traditional ones which is called plain gujiya is evergreen and sell well,” says Srajal Gupta.

Bakeries like JJ, Walnut, Mr Brown, A-One, Cherry Tree are out with “healthy and non-fried options”. “This year we added Caramel gujiya to our baked, wafers, chocolate, kesar and sugar-free variety. To add fun customers and children we create a selfie-with-gujiya zone with some gifting options,” says Vikas Malik of Mr Brown.

Not just bakeries, sweetshops too are out with variety of baked gujiya to catch the demand. “We have a dozen variety of gujiya including baked variants. Every year we make some innovations like this time we have orange variety. Our gift pack which comes with gujiya, colour, pichkari, chocolate and dry fruits are liked by our customers most,” says Ravindra Gupta of Chhappan Bhog.
