It’s not a rat race!

- Vikas Bhandari

This is a humour column, but today I am in a mood of some sermonising... after all such aberrations of pen and cerebration are not uncommon to us writers, especially those who might call themselves the dreamer type!

Long back I read this very interesting piece, “I was jogging this morning and I noticed a person about 1/2 a kilometre ahead. I could tell he was running a little slower than me and I thought, good, I shall try to catch him. I had about a kilometre before I needed to turn off. So I started running faster and faster. Every block, I was gaining on him just a little bit. After just a few minutes I was only about 100 metres behind him, so I really picked up the pace and pushed myself. You would have thought I was running in the last leg of an Olympic competition. I was determined to catch him. Finally, I did it! I caught and passed him. On the inside I felt so good (#I beat him)... wait... just then I realised I had been so focused on competing against the man that I had missed my turn. I had gone nearly six blocks past my turn and now I had to turn and go back. To add to it all, while I missed out on the usual focus on enjoying my run, I also missed to see the beauty of the greenery around me as I ran. Isn’t that what happens in life when we focus on competing too hard with piers, neighbours, friends, family, trying to outdo them or trying to prove that we are a little more successful or important than others? We spend our time and energy running after them and we miss out on our own likes, paths and TURNS!”

Realize that - You can only be the best version of “yourself” when you are not competing with anyone but your own self.”

First follow your hearts, then run your own race well and finally smile at the end of it, whatever the results! Because when you only have one life to live, then you are also responsible to use the gifts that God has given you.

Live healthy... to escape the rat race break the monotony of work by doing things that you have never done before. One of my favourite authors has said, “Life is a series of boring little tasks, punctuated with real experiences”... I am ready for some punctuation now :)

REALIZE THAT YOU CAN ONLY BE THE BEST VERSION OF “YOURSELF” WHEN YOU ARE NOT COMPETING...
