MAJ GEN RASHMI DATTA CATEGORY: WARRIORS IN UNIFORM

Major general Rashmi Datta is a second generation officer in the Indian armed forces. She has followed in her father’s footsteps who was an IAF pilot. A graduate from the Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla, she passed out in 1983 with flying colours. The emotional tug from her father who longed to see her in uniform, made her join the Indian Army in 1984. Having done her obligatory field service in J&K, she was selected for MD (anaesthesiology) from Delhi University. The strenuous duties of training combined with the task of bringing up her young son brought out the best qualities in her. Her specialisation has taken her to various armed forces hospitals across the country. Having operated in counter-insurgency areas of the North East, she proved her mettle in handling mass casualties, one such incident occurred in 2001, for which she was awarded the Army Chief Commendation. She has worked on the faculty of Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, Army Hospital (R&R), Delhi, and has mentored a large number of MD students. A prolific writer, she has authored several scientific papers, contributed chapters to textbooks and authored two books on critical care. She is an active member of various scientific societies and has represented India abroad. She is a recipient of Vishisht Seva Medal from the President as well.. Having excelled in her speciality, she has now moved on to administer one of the largest hospitals of Indian Army-Command Hospital (Western Command) Chandimandir which recently won the Raksha Mantri trophy for the best Command Hospital.
