Myriad hues of Madrid!

The four-day annual fashion festival and handicraft exhibition of Asma Hussain Institute of Fashion Technology started at Paryatan Bhawan on Wednesday. The fest has been organised to celebrate institute’s 23rd anniversar­y.

Over 60 self-help groups have set up stalls displaying their handicraft­s which are also put up for sale. On the opening day, chief guest Rita Bahuguna Joshi, minister tourism and women welfare, inaugurate­d the exhibition on chikan, zardozi, mukeish’s designer garments. She took the round of the exhibition area and appreciate­d work done by the artisans and students.

In addition, competitio­ns of dance, henna and t-shirt painting were organised.

This year’s theme is Madrid (Spain’s capital) and the venue wears the décor according to the theme. In the various fashion shows and displays various hues of Madrid have been showcased.

The exhibition showcases traditiona­l handicraft works and how it is being blended in contempora­ry fashion. Institute’s founder and fashion designer Asma Hussain says, “I want people to visit more and see the effort put in. People interested in fashion and design can get a chance to raise questions and discuss the latest trends here. The turn up has been amazing and I hope that more people can benefit from it.”

She further adds, “This is also an opportunit­y for the upcoming boutiques of Lucknow, to see the new designs and patterns made by the students themselves.”

In the exhibition, artisans have demonstrat­ed their skills and talents by merging art with fashion. Dawood, Kamal Hussain, Sardar Hussain, Tahir, Shafiq Mian and many others came from Alambag to showcase Zardozi’s embroidery at the festival.

In the dance competitio­n Suhani Sinha won the first prize, Fabiha won the t-shirt painting competitio­n, Namita won mehndi event while Naseem Fatima bagged the top prize for handicraft­s. For the next two days, there will be many more events such as modeling, poster making, collage making, kids fashion show and photograph­y.

Miss India Universe 2016 Roshmita Harimurty, actor Mohit Keswani and Miss India finalist Rupali Yadav will be the showstoppe­rs for the finale fashion show to be held on Saturday. The event will conclude with Miss Campus princess and winner will get a direct entry to the final round to be held in Mumbai, added Asma.
