Aplay Aala Afsar was recently staged in the city at Sangeet Natak Academy. The play was based on a story written by famous Hindi writer, activist and thinker Subhash Chandra better known as Mudrarakshas, who hailed from Lucknow itself. The screenplay of the play was adapted from Gogol’s famous play- The Inspector General. A presentation by Vinod Rastogi, Smriti Sansthan, Allahabad, Aala Afsar was directed by Aatmjit Singh .
The main character was portrayed by Ajay Mukkerjee whereas Abhilash Narayan played the chairman, Archana Kesarwani was Chanchal, Sohit Yadav played the police officer along with others. For music Uday Chandra Pradesi was at the harmonium, Praveen Kumaar Srivastava at dholak and nakkara was played by master Phoolchand.
The make-up artist for the day was Sanajy Chaudhary while, Sujoy Ghosal handling the lights.
The tone of the play was realistic and a satire on government’s failure to combat corruption and corrupt officials . The story was written during the time of Emergency which saw the similar traits of corruption as in today’s time.
“The young generation can very much relate to its theme and characters” says Alok Rastogi who firmly believed that the play will have an impact on the society as well. The satirical was well appreciated by the audience and the artistes received a standing ovation from all those present.
