‘Film industry isn’t just about the art form; it’s also about economics’

-

That it takes time to gain a foothold in Bollywood is a no-brainer. Many artists have often opened up about how hard they had to struggle to create a niche in the industry. Talking about his way of staying afloat in showbiz, singer-songwriter Arjun Kanungo says that one needs to clearly understand the mechanics of the industry.

“I don’t think it’s difficult to create a space for yourself in the industry. I think people don’t realise that the film industry is not just about the art form; it is also about the economics,” says Arjun.

“Along with their talent, artists also have to prove how saleable they are. If you are not making money, then why will someone invest in you? The theory applies to everyone, not just musicians. If an actor’s film does not do well at the box office, why will someone invest time and money in him or her instead of someone who is delivering one hit after another?” explains the singer known for songs such as Khoon Choos Le (Go Goa Gone; 2013) and Baaki Baatein Peene Baad.

Arjun adds that one needs to properly plan out how to go about promoting their work.

“One needs to work on their marketing skills along with honing their talent. You must know how you can reach out to more people through proper work — doing anything and everything that comes your way isn’t the right approach. One needs to choose carefully the project one wants to be associated with. Individuality is another important thing. You need to stand out with your work. Musicians must also give equal importance to both Bollywood and non-film music. After all, non-film music is going to stay in people’s memory for long, given that your face is associated it,” he says.
