HOW VISHAL AND SALMAN GOT REKHA TO RAP FOR YPD3

- Rishabh Suri

Music composer Vishal Mishra’s journey in the industry has been an interesting one. Though he began his career as a lawyer, Vishal is now making it big in Bollywood with projects like Race 3, Yamla Pagla Deewana 3, Veere Di Wedding (title track) and he credits Salman Khan for his career’s upswing.

Salman has turned lyricist with his song Selfish in Race 3, which released recently. And how did the actor end up writing the lyrics? Vishal says, “It was nobody’s idea. We were just jamming one day, and he knows what works. He’s the most transparent man, and a visionary in the true sense. His beautiful lyrics helped me to compose. We thought it would be fun for people, too. I feel eternally grateful that he turned lyricist with my song.”

Vishal’s association with Salman started when he worked on Friendship Unlimited (2017), a film directed by Salman’s friend Mahesh Manjrekar. After Race 3, Salman roped in Vishal for Yamla Pagla Deewana 3, too — the actor is in the title track of the song. “The title track of YPD 3 has been composed by me. We had finished the Race 3 songs on March 2, and while I was on my way back home, he called me and told me to come back. It was the quickest song I ever composed, within a day, because the song had to be shot on March 5! I was thrilled,” says the composer.

And veteran actor Rekha turns rapper for the first time with this song. “That song has a very carnival-ish feel to it, and I am sure it will be amazing to see Rekhaji dancing with the Deols — Dharmendra, Bobby and Sunny — and Salman and Sonakshi Sinha. She was surprisingly very sporting about the idea of rapping, and what a beautiful voice she has! We jammed for hours. Many people have been asking me the name of the song, but we have kept it as a surprise. Sonakshi and Salman have also been a part of singing the song,” reveals Vishal.
