Maybe nature wanted me to understand my craft a little better: Sunil on new stint

His fallout with comedian Kapil Sharma — and exit from The Kapil Sharma Show — put an end to Sunil Grover’s famed outings as Rinku Bhabhi and Dr Mashoor Gulati. And he has also been off television for a while now. However, the future promises much bigger rewards. Grover is all set to play the lead in ace filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj’s upcoming Pataakha.

“Working with Vishal sir is a very big deal for me and I’ve been waiting for such a project to come my way,” says Sunil. “I know that everything happens at the right time and for a reason, which we may not be able to understand. Maybe nature wanted me to understand my craft a little better before such a project would come to me. And also you learn and become more confident with time,” he adds.

Sunil’s last film as a lead, titled Coffee With D, didn’t do well.

However, the actor is very clear about his strengths as an artist. “I’m a common man from a middle class family. I think I have a God-given gift of taking situations head on from a neutral ground,” he says. “I’ve seen many situations in life and experienced emotions that have taught me how to handle different situations.”

Right now, the scene is getting better and better — another film in Sunil’s kitty is Bharat, led by Salman Khan.

Despite his extraordinary success on television, Sunil has until now mostly got supporting or cameo roles in films.

But he has no regrets. “I don’t feel that Bollywood hasn’t given me my due. In fact, I feel extremely lucky to be a part of the entertainment industry and being given the chance to work with such talented people,” says the actor, whose films include Baaghi (2016). With two big films, will his TV career take a break? He says, “I can’t take up a regular TV show, but I’ll be doing standalone episodes.”
