MERGING PASSION WITH PROFESSION

- YASH SRIVASTAVA

Paintings of Dr Nidhi Singh, a self-taught artist and an obstetrician and gynaecologist are now on display to the public at the Kala Srot Art Gallery. The exhibition, titled ‘Udbhav’, is a collection of upwards of 40 paintings made with mediums ranging from pens, pencil colours, oil pastels, acrylics and oil paints to experimental mediums such as melted crayons, salt and egg shells.

Singh’s forte is her doodles which makes the core of her art practice. Most of her artworks grow organically and take shape without any premeditation. She is a strong believer in the therapeutic properties of art.

Of particular interest is a sub-collection of eight canvases titled ‘Vibrant’ that has been painted using Ayre’s spatula and the Cytobrush — tools used for screening for cervical cancer. It showcases the teal ribbon in the centre piece (a symbol for raising cervical cancer awareness) and seven surrounding canvases depict the colours of the rainbow.

With this series of paintings Singh has merged her love for art with her profession and attempted to draw attention to a simple test that can detect cervical cancer early and save lives. “Life should remain vibrant and colourful for all women and cancer should not eclipse their beautiful lives” she says.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Shekhar Hospital chairperson Dr Richa Mishra while ex-minister Sangram Singh and ex-DGP Rameshwar Dayal was the guest of honour. Advocate and bonsai artist Vijay Laxmi and ex-director Balrampur Hospital Dr Shobh Nath were the special guest on the occasion. It is open till next Sunday from 11 am onwards.
