FUNNY MAN STEVE CARELL PLAYS A PTSD PATIENT IN HIS NEXT FILM

-

In the second trailer of upcoming movie Welcome to Marwen, Hollywood star Steve Carell can be seen dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD ).

Best known for the hit comedy series The Office, Steve Carell plays the role of Mark Hogancamp, who suffers from a trauma after being attacked by a group of Nazis. He is shown leading a life of a World War II illustrator in order to survive the traumas and carry on with his normal life.

The film seems a far cry from the usual projects taken on by Carell, who was even touted as America’s Funniest Man by Life magazine. However, it is not the first intense film for the actor — he has done a crime drama Foxcatcher (2014) and a gay rights drama Freeheld (2015), among others.

The second trailer shows the physical struggle which Carell’s character faces to recover from the attack. In the trailer, he says, “I got beaten within an inch of my life for no reason.” His character goes through a long process of recovery as he relies on medication and attends rehab to learn how to walk with a prosthetic leg. To deal with his PTSD, he creates a fantasy world, Marwen, wherein he installs female dolls which indicates the women present in his life. In a number of intense scenes, the dolls are shooting which indicates Hogencamp’s emotional and physical struggle to maintain his sanity in reality via the fantasy world.

The movie is slated to hit the silver screens on December 21.
