OLD AND NEW, A GREAT SONG IS ALWAYS GREAT

Chamma Chamma from China Gate, picturised on Urmila Matondkar, joins the long list of iconic Hindi movie songs remade — or being remade — this year. No matter how the films fared, most of these revamped songs got much love

EK DO TEEN

This Alka Yagnik song from Tezaab (1988) being a cult number, and one of the best performances of dancing queen Madhuri Dixit, anyone reprising it would have huge, huge shoes to fill. In Baaghi 2, singer Shreya Ghoshal and actor Jacqueline Fernandez did their best to recapture that magic, but the recreated song couldn’t hold a candle to the original. It did get talked about a lot, though.

BADAN PE SITARE

This is one song that has got everyone shaking a leg, irrespective of their age. Originally sung by the legendary Mohammed Rafi for the Shammi Kapoor-starrer Prince (1969), the song found a place in the recent release Fanney Khan. The new version, sung by Sonu Nigam, was picturised on Anil Kapoor dancing to its tune.

GAZAB KA HAI DIN

This iconic song from the Aamir Khan-Juhi Chawla-starrer Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), sung by Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan, was remade for Dil Junglee. The movie didn’t do too well at the box office, but the song got much love from audiences, with the change in lyrics and fresh voices of Jubin Nautiyal and Prakriti Kakar.

DIL TOTE TOTE HO GAYA

This is a hard-to-forget song for all the ’90s kids. The song, sung for the film Bichhoo (2000) by Hans Raj Hans and Shweta Shetty, was remade as Chhote Chhote Peg by YoYo Honey Singh for the film Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. Apart from the tune, nothing really remained the same. A line in the song suggested that it was ‘an A-rated version’ of the original.

AASHIQ BANAYA AAPNE

The original song came out in 2005, in the movie of the same name, starring Emraan Hashmi. The remake in Hate Story 4 was more of an item number, filmed on Urvashi Rautela. The lyrics from the original were barely used and there was a completely new take on the tune as well. However, composer-singer Himesh Reshammiya managed to make another chartbuster with singer Neha Kakkar.

DILBAR

The John Abraham-starrer Satyameva Jayate, one of the two big Independence Day releases this year, completely revamped this song. We had Nora Fatehi doing a belly dance-ish number to the song, which was originally picturised on Sushmita Sen for Sirf Tum (1999). The song, originally sung by Alka Yagnik, was recreated in the voices of Dhvani Bhanushali, Neha Kakkar, and Ikka — and the new version crossed 100 million YouTube views soon after its release.
