Eva Longoria to be honoured at Latino awards
Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria will be among those honoured at next month’s ALMA awards, which will be held on November 4. Actor Wilmer Valderrama will host the award ceremony that celebrates Latino achievements in American entertainment and media.
Activists Samantha Fuentes and Jamie Margolin will also be honoured at the event. Fuentes survived the Parkland, Florida (US), school shooting, while Margolin founded the Zero Hour movement to address climate change.
Actor Gina Rodriguez, the star of the TV show Jane the Virgin, is also on the list of awardees. She will share the spotlight with the show’s cast.
Performances by Fifth Harmony member Ally Brooke and singer-actor Amara La Negra will be featured at the event.
In a statement on Friday, host Valderrama said Latino achievements and contributions need to be spotlighted more than ever at what he called a “critical” time.
The ALMAs — American Latino Media Arts Awards — are back after a three-year hiatus, in time for the 50th anniversary of UnidosUS, previously known as National Council of La Raza.
UnidosUS is USA’s largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organisation. In 1995, it created the ALMAs as a way to promote fair, accurate, and balanced portrayals of Latinos in the entertainment industry.
Married to Mexican businessman José Antonio “Pepe” Bastón Patiño, Longoria gave birth to their son, Santiago, on June 19. She is currently shooting for Dora the Explorer’s live action movie.
