‘I got fed up of bechaari roles’

Actor Preeti Jhangiani talks about being away from Bollywood for over a decade, and says that we will see more of her now

Actor Preeti Jhangiani, last seen in the 2007 Hindi film Victoria No. 203, didn’t take a break from acting in all these years, as everyone thinks. “My upcoming Hindi film is not my comeback to acting, but Hindi films. I don’t know why everybody keeps saying that. I have constantly been doing films, just that they were not in Hindi. I did regional films in Bengali, Rajasthani, Punjabi… all these after [having] my kids,” says the actor, best known for Mohabbatein (2000).

The reason she didn’t take up Hindi films all these years was the “lack of correct offers”. “It was a conscious decision to not take up those offers. I decided to only do stuff which I like and which would make me happy — as simple as that. It had to be something which the audience will like. There was no point taking up many films, of which half would get made and not get released. It should be a filmmaker who can take a good script to the audience,” says Preeti, who feels she got typecast in sad roles.

“I got fed up of doing the same kind of stuff. I always got bechaari, dukhiyaari roles, so far removed from my personality,” she adds.

What all kept her busy all these years? “I have my kids, the younger aged three and the elder one seven. I’ve just come out of this mumma phase, so you’ll be seeing a lot more of me now. We also have our own company, which does shows and events. We also produced a short film recently,” she signs off.
