Freedom of speech is a right but also a responsibility. Social media has revolutionised us but not without its drawbacks. It is powerful and people are not filtering their expression. The younger generation seems to be confused about where to draw the line. Trolling can be vicious and one needs to behave responsibly be it with a celebrity or anyone else.
In the last few years, I’ve witnessed hate speech being normalised. Social media is a double-edged sword, while it has brought the world closer, people use their voice to their advantage. There are tactics for indirect suppression with troll armies abusing people, widespread fake news, paid bots, who often dilute the real voices and ruin causes.
With the advent of social media, there is polarisation as people from both sides have an army of trolls and we have started hating anyone who doesn’t agree with us. We should learn to accept, respect and appreciate opinions, even if they are different from ours. That’s how we will be able to say we are a republic and that there is unity in diversity.
Words have power and should be used carefully. Social media is for the people and not the other way round. We all need to know difference between real and fake. Every human being in this world is responsible for their own actions and that’s why one must be a responsible citizen as well.
I feel there is a huge section of people who don’t take too well, if someone speaks their mind. I have experienced trolling and I hope social media starts to allow people to be their individualistic selves and let them voice their opinion without the fear of who would think what. Or else everyone will follow the herd mentality and write what others want to hear .
