A call for action: India’s only environmental film festival returns

When it comes to tackling climate change and environmental degradation, the pace at which things are moving, many argue, is rather slow. And the reason for this, some say, is the exclusivity. A mere cabal of top-level executives is not enough; conversations need to be held among masses. And, hoping to initiate a change on this front is the All Living Things Environmental Film Festival.

“Last year, close to 5,000 people attended various events and film viewings, virtually,” says Kunal Khanna, director of the festival. He adds, “We have got support and submissions from leading environmental documentary and film makers. This year, we have 125 entries.”

This virtual film fest, slated to begin on October 9, is b organised in an attempt to create awareness around the environment, climate change and other important topics through the medium of films. “I think training and financial support to cover stories about the environment and bringing these to mainstream cinema will generate wider awareness about these topics. We also lack significant opportunities and resources to pursue careers in short films. This is a huge opportunity, as a good bite-sized production can g truly pack a punch, h

As for the selection process, a source from the selection team says “groundbreaking and compelling” films that “showcase the beauty of our planet, create awareness on critical issues” is what the festival is all about. Khanna hopes the response this year will be as good as last year, if not better. “Enabling more film festivals, not just in big cities but across the board, can lead to a range of benefits,” he concludes.
