Sunny Deol, Anil Sharma and Zee Studios reunite for Gadar 2

This Dussehra, the makers of 2001’s hit movie, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha have a special treat in store for fans. Tara Singh, Sakeena and Jeete, the on-screen family, who touched the heart of the nation 20 years ago, are making a comeback. Yes, after years of speculation, Gadar 2 is finally in the making. Actors Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, Utkarsh Sharma will reprise their respective roles. The movie will be produced by Zee Studios and Anil Sharma Productions, directed by Anil Sharma and written by Shaktimaan. It is currently in the pre-production stage and will go on floors soon. The music will be composed by Mithoon. We spoke to Anil Sharma and Sunny Deol to know more. Excerpts:

When we did

Gadar, we didn’t know that it would go on to become such a cult film. It is a family, romantic film. Whenever there has been a conversation about a sequel, it got difficult to justify. So, I wasn’t keen on doing it until Shaktimaan ji and Anil ji narrated it to me. I am a fan of Gadar, and

Gadar 2 will take the legacy forward.

In the past, everyone has been asking me about the second part of the film and when it would be released. Gadar is not just mine, Sunny sir’s or Zee Studios’ film; it belongs to all those people who watched and loved it. That is why we took so long to come with Gadar 2 because we wanted to make the film only when we were completely sure of the story, emotions of the characters and how we were able to keep it real. The story is an extended version of the first film.

The character made a special place in the audiences’ hearts. People back then had started calling me Tara Singh. Such was the impact. It will be interesting to see how his story pans out this time around. It remains one of my most favourite performances to date.

I am excited to tell the story of Tara, Sakeena and Jeete, who has grown up now. When I got this idea, I shared it with Sunny sir and then when I got a go-ahead [from him], I approached Zee Studios and they loved it too. I have an old association with them and I am excited to take it forward. We have been working on the script for the past three years and it gives me great joy to make this announcement. This Dussehra is all the more special.
