Classical band-o-bast for music learners

- HT Correspondent

Music learners at Bhatkhande Music Institute (deemed university) would have a new assignment this academic session. In addition to the regular classes of the subjects they opt for, they would also have a chance to get enrolled for ‘Bhatkhande Vrind’ -- the institute’s own classical band.

If all goes as per plan, the all-students’ band would be constituted during the upcoming academic session. “It will be like other music bands. The band will focus on classical music while all the instruments and singing will be based on the raags,” said a senior faculty at the institute.

Bhatkhande had for long been planning its own band. However, till

now it had not been able to carry the idea forward in the desired way. “It isn’t that we don’t have our performers. Our students perform regularly at the Hanuman Setu temple and elsewhere. But once the band is formed, the students would have to rehearse regularly and have to be committed towards the assignments that the band undertakes,” said the faculty member.

The band would also experiment with the classical raags and fusion music may be created based on classical raags, he added.

The regular performances of the band would be held on the open stage at the institute on weekends. Authorities feel this would help students learn to perform before live audiences.

The band would provide opportunities not just to the existing students of the institute, but also those who have passed out. “Since we plan to hold separate classes for the band each day, it would be a committed effort from the session and we hope to take the idea forward in a big way,” said the faculty members involved in the project.

The new academic session has already started at the institute for the old students while the admission process for new students is on and classes would soon begin for freshers, said the teachers.
