CCTV footage, call records nail Kanpur industrialist
Jyoti’s husband broke down only after his unusual behaviour caught on camera put him in a spot
KANPUR: For hours at end, industrialist Piyush Shyam Dasani remained evasive about his wife Jyoti’s killing but CCTV footage from the restaurant he last dined in and call record details from his own cellphone proved to be his nemesis.
According to inspector general (IG) Ashutosh Pandey, “The CCTV footage revealed that instead of quietly enjoying his dinner, Piyush is anxious about something and is constantly on the phone. He even went outside the restaurant twice.”
Police said Piyush made around eight calls to Awadhesh between 6pm and 9.55pm on Sunday, which suggested they were in cahoots on something fishy.
“From the third floor of the restaurant he came down and even crossed the road of the Company Bagh crossing as was shown in the CCTV footage,” Pandey told media in a press meet.
Throwing light on another major evidence, he said, “Soon after committing the crime, Piyush had deleted call details and text messages from his phone. It was found that he had exchanged about 150 text mes- sages with someone.”
Moreover, he had conversed with his alleged love interest around 633 times in two months.
“This revelation led us to suspect that the affair had a lot to do with the murder,” said a senior police official. Finally, after 20 hours of cross-questioning Dasani is said to have broken down before the cops and accepted that he got his wife killed.
