‘ Rich nations forced IPCC to ‘drop’ key climate chart’

- Press Trust of India

NEW DELHI: A leading advocacy group on Thursday claimed that rich nations forced the RK Pachauri -chaired Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to “drop” a chart accusing Western countries of consumption-based emissions from its latest report, a contention denied by IPCC.

Climate expert and Deputy Director General of Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Chandra Bhushan, said the chart was part of the draft report of working group III of IPCC, which warned in its latest statement last

THE CHART WARNED THAT CURRENT TRENDS IN CARBON EMISSIONS WILL LEAD TO DISASTER

week that current trends in carbon emissions will lead to disaster.

Displaying the “removed” graphics showing rich nations’ contribution in consumptionbased emissions at a media briefing here, he claimed if the chart was retained in IPCC’s original report, it would have been a “big embarrassment” for developed nations, which are historical emitters.

“It was in the draft report of working group III of IPCC and it was finally removed,” he alleged.

Bhushan said he got the copy of the chart from a key member of the IPCC, who was part of the team which prepared the report. He, however, did not reveal his “friend’s” name.

Pachauri rejected the allegations saying these are “completely wrong”.

“There was not a single figure which was dropped from the synthesis report. Every figure from the draft submitted for approval was retained intact,” he told PTI.

The CSE’s allegations came days ahead of a key UN conference on climate change in Peruvian capital Lima.
