Toll in Malda kid deaths rises to 14

MALDA: With the death of another baby at Malda Medical College and Hospital (MMCH), the toll has reached 14 in the last four days. However, the unofficial figure is 20.

A senior doctor at the hospital said, “We have controlled the deaths to a large extent in last 24 hours. Only one new born baby has died here in that time. The baby was referred to MMCH at a very critical stage.”

State horticulture minister and the president of MMCH’s patient welfare committee KN Chowdhury said, “After upgrading Malda district hospital as medical college, pressure of patients has increased. Not only are patients from Murshidabad and Dinajpur referred here but also patients from Bihar and Jharkhand.”
