Apr 1937 Naga areas kept out of purview of Government of India Act (1935) and brought directly under British Crown following sustained campaign by Naga Club formed in 1918

Aug 1947 Naga National Council (formerly Naga Club) declares Naga Independen­ce Day after declining Nehru’s offer to join Indian Union

Jul 1960 New Delhi signs 16-point agreement with Naga People’s Convention, an alternativ­e to AZ Phizo-led NNC that continued waging war

Dec 1963 Nagaland formally becomes a state with special constituti­onal rights after six years of being a Union Territory

Nov 1975 Shillong Accord signed between New Delhi and Naga groups but rejected by many rebel leaders

Jan 1980 Disgruntle­d rebel leaders Thuingalen­g Muivah (above, left), Isak Chishi Swu (right), & SS Khaplang form NSCN toward the self-rule of Nagas

Apr 1988 Khaplang, allegedly backed by Indian forces, breaks away to form NSCN-K after falling out with Muivah; the other group is called NSCN-Isak Muivah

Jul 1997 India announces three-month ceasefire with NSCN-IM, a result of truce offer initiated by PM Narasimha Rao in February 1996 and later cemented by IK Gujral

Aug 1997 Ceasefire with NSCN-IM takes effect in Nagaland; bid to extend it to other northeast states leads to violence later

Apr 2001 NSCN-K suspends war and ceasefire with it takes effect

Mar 2015 NSCN-K junks ceasefire; renews conflict by ambushing and killing at least 30 Indian soldiers since
