Aug 1947 Naga National Council (formerly Naga Club) declares Naga Independence Day after declining Nehru’s offer to join Indian Union
Jul 1960 New Delhi signs 16-point agreement with Naga People’s Convention, an alternative to AZ Phizo-led NNC that continued waging war
Dec 1963 Nagaland formally becomes a state with special constitutional rights after six years of being a Union Territory
Nov 1975 Shillong Accord signed between New Delhi and Naga groups but rejected by many rebel leaders
Jan 1980 Disgruntled rebel leaders Thuingaleng Muivah (above, left), Isak Chishi Swu (right), & SS Khaplang form NSCN toward the self-rule of Nagas
Apr 1988 Khaplang, allegedly backed by Indian forces, breaks away to form NSCN-K after falling out with Muivah; the other group is called NSCN-Isak Muivah
Jul 1997 India announces three-month ceasefire with NSCN-IM, a result of truce offer initiated by PM Narasimha Rao in February 1996 and later cemented by IK Gujral
Aug 1997 Ceasefire with NSCN-IM takes effect in Nagaland; bid to extend it to other northeast states leads to violence later
