Doctor surrenders before CJM’s court
AK Srivastava sent to 14-day judicial custody
LUCKNOW: Suspended government doctor AK Srivastava, accused of a patient’s death due to negligence, surrendered before the court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM) here on Wednesday.
Srivastava had been at large after 21-year-old youth Shivam Shukla died while undergoing an operation for gall bladder stone at a private hospital in Chinhat on July 20. The doctor’s surrender came soon after the youth’s family members met Governor Ram Naik on Tuesday, demanding his arrest in the case.
The accused doctor had operated upon the youth at a private hospital in violation of his service norms. According to reports, Shivam’s veins snapped during the operation resulting in internal bleeding that caused his death. On July 21, the youth’s father GD Shukla had lodged an FIR against the doctor with the Vibhuti Khand police station and accused him of causing death due to medical negligence.
“We were continuously raiding the doctor’s hideouts for his arrest. Even on Tuesday night, the police raided his brother’s house and took his servant into custody to extract the doctor’s whereabouts. He was under continuous pressure that subsequently led to his surrender in the CJM court,” said Vinod Mishra, station officer, Vibhuti Khand police station. The court sent Srivastava to 14 days’ judicial custody, he added.
Mishra said he would apply for the doctor’s custody remand to quiz him about the entire episode. The police team was also consulting some medical experts so that proper action could be initiated against the doctor, he said.
Earlier, senior officials of the health directorate had suspended the doctor after media highlighted Shivam death case.
