LUCKNOW: Diabetics, who will be observing Navratri fast, starting from Tuesday, should remain cautious about eating something every three hours, recommend doctors. “Diabetics need to ensure that they take an adequate diet to keep their blood sugar levels balanced at all times,” said Dr Shalini Srivastava of KGMU.

“They can eat everything but in the right proportions. However, their chief diet should be fruits,” added Srivastava, while talking about the fast-time diet of diabetics.

Doctors also recommend oats / dalia as a good breakfast option for diabetics. Fruits and boiled potatoes are suggested as good options during fasts.

“Normally those who keep fast for all the days ensure that they have food in adequate quantity but diabetics are at risk and should take special care to ensure a balanced and regular diet,” said Dr PK Gupta of IMA.

Among fruits, apple, papaya and oranges are good options for sugar patients. Fruit juice, if needed, should be homemade. “Banana has high calorie content that can increase one’s body fat therefore other fruits can be tried. Among vegetables bottle gourd is a good choice,” said Dr Vijay Seth.

Doctors also advise against over eating to avoid feeling lazy. “Adequate quantity of fruits and liquids keep a person fit and healthy. Dry fruits are another good alternative. Whether diabetic or not, anyone can have them in the morning,” said Srivastava.
