SANIA MIRZA, 28, tennis player Sania, who is currently ranked the women’s doubles number one along with partner Martina Hingis, is called India’s most successful tennis player by BBC. In 2015, she was both the Wimbledon and US Open women’s doubles champion.

ASHA BHOSLE, 82, singer BBC calls her “a singing legend… who features in the Guinness Book of Records as the most recorded artist in music history”. As a playback singer, she has recorded songs for a 1,000 films, the profile says

KANIKA TEKRIWAL, 27, entreprene­ur After being diagnosed with cancer in her early 20s, Kanika was determined to make her mark, and establishe­d India’s first and only marketplac­e for private jet and helicopter charters, says her profile.

KAMINI KAUSHAL, 88, actor BBC calls Kamini Kaushal the “Vivienne Leigh of her generation in Bollywood”. She has acted in more than a hundred films and is the leading actress in Neecha Nagar that won best film in Cannes in 1946 — the first Indian film to do so

RIMPPI KUMARI, 32, farmer Rimppi Kumari, her profile says, is a farmer who, along with her sister Karamjit, took over a 32-acre farm in Rajasthan after their father died.

SMRITI NAGPAL, 25, entreprene­ur Smriti set up Atulyakala, an organisati­on that sells products made by hearing-impaired designers.

MUMTAZ SHAIKH, 33, campaigner After decades of women being charged to use public toilets in India, despite the fact they are free for men, Mumtaz succeeded in providing free facilities for women through the Right to Pee network.
