JNU, NEW DELHI
PARTY COLOURS: A Left-dominated campus with different Left-leaning organisations. In the past few years, it is the All India Students Association (AISA) of CPI (Marxist Leninist), which has had a strong hold on the campus. In 2013-14, all the office bearers of the student body were from AISA. The other Left organisation is the Students Federation of India (SFI), which once had a very strong hold on the campus but is now fighting with other Left-leaning organisations.
HISTORY: Elections are a well laid out annual affair managed entirely by students. The union election, which includes a presidential debate, is closely followed in the national capital. For a long time, the elections were fought on the larger political issues of the country and the world. Lately, campus-related issues have also become a part of the agenda of student organisations.
TALKING POINT: JNU has been an upfront campus, which has been the forerunner in organising protests. JNU students spearheaded the protest in 2012 against the December 16 gangrape. Recently, they led a nation-wide campaign, Occupy UGC, against the cancellation of the Non-NET fellowship. But the recent issue, where students have been accused of raising anti-national slogans and the arrest of student union leader Kanhaiya Kumar, has brought world attention to the campus.
