At least 12 people, including the driver and conductor, were injured when a private air-conditioned bus overturned after ramming into a divider near Amausi airport in Sarojini Nagar on Thursday morning.

The injured people were discharged after being given first aid while the driver and cleaner were still undergoing treatment at the Lok Bandhu hospital.

District police spokesman, Alok Pathak said the incident took place when the bus (UP65 BT 3267) was coming from Delhi to Lucknow. The vehicle moved from Delhi on Wednesday night and the driver was tired after overnight driving. The bus hit a divider and overturned on the turn towards Amausi airport on Kanpur road, he said.

The accident caused panic among passengers travelling on the bus. Locals and passers-by rushed to the rescue of passengers and pulled out the conductor, whose leg was trapped under the bus and the driver who was stuck in the cabin.

The police and district administration officials also swung into action after coming to know about the incident. Seven ambulances were pressed into service to rush the injured people to the nearby Lok Bandhu hospital. All the passengers were discharged after proper check-up.

The passengers stated that it was fortunate that there was no casualty in the accident. But they had a horrific experience, as they were literally trapped inside the bus for over 30 minutes.

“Anyone of us could have come under the bus and died,” lamented a passenger, asking transport officials to ensure proper training of drivers for overnight journeys and other safety measures in private buses.
