Surgeons in the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi took almost seven hours to transplant the liver retrieved from a 55-year-old brain dead woman patient at King George’s Medical University here.

A team of doctors led by Prof Abhijit Chandra retrieved the liver, 16th in the past two years, on Wednesday evening and it was immediately transported to ILBS. “The transplant operation started at around 8 pm, straight after we reached ILBS campus, and went on till 3 am on Thursday,” said Prof Abhijit Chandra, who returned to Lucknow after the successful operation .

The patient whose liver was retrieved suffered from kidney failure and when she became brain dead, the family decided to donate the organ. To get the organ transported safely and on time, the city police arranged a congestion free Green Corridor( KGMU-HazratganjVIP road-airport) for about 28 kilometres.

All traffic movement was restricted to allow quick passage of the ambulance carrying the organ without any stoppage on the way. The distance usually takes an ambulance 50 minutes to reach the airport from KGMU but this time it was done within half-an-hour.

During the journey, Prof Chandra was in contact with Dr Vinit Pamecha of the transplant unit of ILBS and kept giving updates about the movement. The KGMU team was provided a green corridor in New Delhi also that helped them reach ILBS from the airport within minutes.

“The operation was successful. Now the patient will remain under observation for the next five days,” said Prof Chandra.
