DU college forms committee to reinstate GN Saibaba

- Heena Kausar

NEW DELHI: Delhi University’s Ram Lal Anand College has formed a one-member committee to look into revoking the suspension of G N Saibaba, who was arrested in 2014 by the Maharashtra police for alleged links with Maoists.

The 90% disabled English teacher, who was granted bail by the Supreme Court on April 4, reported to the college recently and sent a letter to the Principal. “I reported back to the college as required by service rules, to initiate the process of my reinstatement,” he said.

On Thursday, the college convened an emergency Governing Body (GB) meeting to discuss the matter and revoke his suspension. “A one-member committee has been formed to look into his reinstatement. We will take a decision based on the recommendation of the committee,” said Principal Vijay K Sharma.

Saibaba was suspended by the college on May 15, 2014, five days after he was arrested by the Maharasthra Police for suspected Maoist links.

Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) joint secretary Chhatrapal Yadav and some other students protested at the college and submitted a memorandum to the GB, requesting that Saibaba should not be reinstated.

“We have requested the GB that he should not be appointed back to the college. He should not be allowed to come inside the college because he can influence other students. His joining will give wrong signals to students. He even addressed the students in a class few days ago which should not be allowed,” Yadav said.

Meanwhile some students from the English department wrote a letter to the principal alleging that students from outside came to the college and misbehaved with Saibaba. “They are not representing students of our department so we request you not to consider their opinions,” the letter to the Principal said. However, Sharma said he has not received any letter from students.
