Lucknow Univ to start MA in Awadh Culture

LUCKNOW: University of Lucknow (LU) will start an MA course in Awadh culture from the new academic session. The course having 130 seats will be run by department of Urdu, LU vicechance­llor SB Nimse said on Monday.

Speaking at a function jointly organised by LU’s Urdu department and Maulana Azad Institute of Humanities, Science and Technology, the V-C also said that a language laboratory was set up on the university campus.

Abbas Raza Nayyar, head, Urdu department, said there were plans to increase the number of seats of the department to 300 and divide them into three branches -- Urdu Literature, Linguistic­s and Mass Communicat­ions.

Speaking on the occasion, governor Ram Naik said it was time to tell everyone that Urdu was still very much relevant and in demand. “It is wrong to say there is no future of those who are learning Urdu,” he said.

“Urdu is a beautiful language and it is very pleasing to ears. If there is any demand for the promotion of the language, I will take it up with the chief minister,” the governor said.

Former UP minister Ammar Rizvi had appealed to the governor to ensure that road signages should also be in Urdu and FIRs be lodged in the language for those who are not well versed in Hindi. On the occasion, a number of awards were also distribute­d to those who have worked for promotion of Urdu as a language.

URDU AT LA MARTINIERE COLLEGE

La Martiniere College, Lucknow has introduced Urdu from this academic session for classes 5 to 8. In all 40 students have opted the course in class 5.
