LUCKNOW: The web-based crime mapping system has brought to fore startling facts before the state police. It has revealed that more incidents of crime are reported in the first half of the year (January to June) as compared to the second half of the year.

The mapping also revealed that criminals are more active on the first two days of the week as compared to other days.

DGP Javeed Ahmad shared these details with the media after analysing the state-wide data through web-based crime mapping software here on Tuesday. He said mapping also showed that more crime happened at locations close to main roads and between 6 pm and 9pm. He said the mapping also gives a clear view of crime-prone districts and crime-prone areas in each district of the state.

“The data analysis would help police in curbing crime and better deployment of force in the state,” emphasised the DGP, adding, “This system would map place, nature and time of the crime of the last three years. By using GIS of Google Maps, police would plot the crime patterns. This will allow cops to identify crime hotspots and take preventive measures.”

Earlier, a similar webbased crime mapping was done by IG Ashutosh Pandey during his posting in Agra and Kanpur zones. The idea of web-based crime mapping was later implemented across the state after the DGP was impressed with the idea that helps preventing crime through a study of patterns and frequency of crime particular to a spot.
