In a bid to promote renewable energy, a city techie has come up with a solar-powered five-in-one device which can be used as an air cooler, freezer, food warmer, emergency light and a mobile charger.

Pankaj Yadav, a third year student of mechanical engineering at a private institute at Pahariya, has conceptualised, designed and invented this device.

He said, “Use of solar energy is the need of the hour. But unfortunately it is not so popular as there are limited equipment available in the market for household work and they too are expensive . Thus, I decided to invent a device that performs several day-to-day work through solar power . He created this unique machine and named it ‘five in one solar use’ (FIOSU).”

Explaining the functioning of FIOSU, he said, “The fullycharged solar panel can run the device for 17 hours performing all the five functions together. It will keep the temperature of the freezer at a minimum of 17 degrees Celsius and of the food warmer at a maximum of 63 degrees Celsius.” The machine costs around Rs 5,500. “I have used waste materials to make the device that reduces its manufacturing cost. I have spent between Rs 5,000 and Rs 5,500 on it,” he said. Moreover, the machine can also work with electrical power in case of low sunlight in winter or monsoon, he added.

Appreciating Pankaj’s effort, the vice-chairman of the institute Amit Maurya, said, “Pankaj is always keen to promote renewable energy. It is his second project. Earlier, he created a three-in-one solar stove that was able to run on solar power, LPG and electricity.”

The vice-chairman said the institute was making efforts to get the concept of FIOSU patented in the name of Pankaj.
