Oppn attacks govt in RS over price rise

- HT Correspondent

Opposition parties came together in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday to take on the NDA government over the issue of price rise.

The Opposition members also disrupted the reply by Union minister of food and public distribution Ram Vilas Paswan, who listed out a host of measures the government is taking to curb price rise and argued that there is no price rise in commodities except in pulses.

Paswan also asked state governments to lift subsidised pulses from the buffer stock for sale at a reasonable price to consumers, besides importing pulses and further subsidising the grains supplied by the Centre under the food law.

“There is price rise on everything. The way you went about listing them can bring many privilege motions against you,” leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, said. The Congress also staged a walk out after the discussion.

Congress leader Rajni Patil (rpt Rajni Patil) dubbed the Modi government as “a government of catchy slogans”. Prabhat Jha of the BJP defended the government claiming that price rise was prevalent in the 10 years of UPA rule.

Naresh Aggarwal of the Samajwadi Party took a dig at chief Ram Vilas Paswan, saying that he hoped the Union minister will remember his politics favouring the Dalits and the poor and not give a reply on the price rise with a “capitalist mindset.”
