LMC may start using eco-friendly tiles for parks
LUCKNOW: For its parks, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) may soon start using eco-friendly tiles recommended by IIT-Kanpur students. The tiles are currently being tested by the civic body for strength and load-bearing capacity.
A group of IIT-K graduates had approached LMC officials as they wanted these tiles to be used instead of the traditional tiles. Municipal commissioner Udairaj Singh asked IIT students to submit documents in support of the product, which they were recommending so aggressively. They were also asked to submit the technology used for building the tiles.
The IIT-K students claimed that the eco-friendly tiles made from Japanese technology were stronger and more eco-friendly than the ones used now. These tiles can be used for pathways in parks, footpaths along roads and consume lesser water during the process of installation.
Under the smart city project, Lucknow has to take up a lot of work where tiles would be required and IIT-K students said these tiles would save a lot of water.
“We are waiting for more documentary proofs and reports from their labs. It has to be seen how much water these tiles consume while being fixed and whether they allow seepage of rainwater into the ground for water harvesting or not, “said additional municipal commissioner PK Srivastava.
He added: “We are not averse to using new tiles, but they must be proven before we start using them. The students have asked to test these tiles in their own labs and submit a report to us. After that we will match the results of IIT-K lab with results of our labs and one more independent lab to confirm the authenticity of tests.”
