THE STATE GOVT ALSO LAUNCHED ‘WOMEN POWER LINE 1090’ (A HELPLINE) TO INSTIL A SENSE OF SECURITY AMONG THE WOMEN

LUCKNOW: Even as the opposition attacked the state government on the CAG report highlighting a spurt in cases of crime against women, the state government on Wednesday retaliated by stating that law and order in UP was much better than in other states.

“Uttar Pradesh ranked below Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra in terms of crime against women. UP is a big state and requires huge resources. In kidnapping cases, the position of UP is 10th. In rape cases, the rank is 24th and in the cases of women atrocities UP ranked 14th,” secretary, Home, Kamal Saxena said.

“The CAG report mentions that there has been an increase in rape cases in the state. The CAG report is based on five years’ data. The year 2014-15 recorded an increase of five rape cases in comparison to 2013-14. In year 2013-14, 2,940 rape cases were reported in the state. In 2014-15, 2945 rape cases were reported,” he said in a statement.

“The state government is sensitive to the security of women and children. Several measures have been taken to improve law and order. Well-known companies and investors are heading toward UP and have invested in various sectors, “Saxena said.

Saxena claimed that according to National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) data, the rate of crime in UP was less than the national rate.

“Owing to effective pursuing of cases in court, there has been an increase in the conviction rate as well. While the national conviction rate is 45.1, in UP conviction rate is 53.2%,” he said.

The scheme for providing financial and other support to the victims have been implemented. The state government had given Rs 5 lakh to acid attack victims and Rs 3 lakh to the rape victims, he added.

The state government also launched ‘women power line 1090’ (a helpline) to instil a sense of security among the women.

The complaints of the women were lodged online and antihuman trafficking units were set up in 35 police stations, he said.

Besides, the home department had launched the heinous crime monitoring system.
