*On August 22, one Manju Chauhan, 50, from Meerut walked into Srinath Jewellers in Bhoothnath area here posing as a wife of an income tax officer and introduced her aide Dayashanker as her personal assistant.

*She purchased jewellery worth `11.60 lakh and handed over two cheques of ` 6 lakh and ` 5.60 lakh to the jeweller.

*But when the store owner, Nitin Rastogi deposited the cheque in his bank, he came to know that Manju’s account had only ` 49. He lodged a complaint with the Ghazipur police on August 24.

LUCKNOW: Acting on a tip-off after Nitin’s complaint, cops arrested Dayashanker Tewari, a native of Pratapgarh, from Polytechnic crossing here on Friday while Manju Chauhan was at large. But cops managed to recover the gold and silver from her residence in Pallavpuram area of Meerut.

A police team from Ghazipur police station was dispatched to Meerut after cops got Manju’s address from a photocopy of the Aadhar Card which she had handed over to the jeweller.

When the Ghazipur police led by sub-inspector Rahmatullah Khan reached Manju’s address on Thursday, she was not present in the house and all the things there were found packed. However, Manju’s two daughters and one son were present there.

Cops came to know that Manju was a tenant and was about to vacate the house. However, before Manju could vacate the house, cops reached her residence in Meerut and recovered all gold and silver.

“We have recovered all gold and silver jewellery. Dayashanker has been arrested from Polytechnic crossing in the state capital. However, Manju is still absconding,” said Nagendra Chaubey, station house officer, Ghazipur police station.

Several cases of forgery are also lodged against Manju at Pallavpuram police station, added Chaubey.

“I could not suspect any foul play as Manju was very well dressed and well behaved,” said Nitin Rastogi, owner of Srinath Jewellers.

Manju used to stay in Hotel Diamond in Hussainganj area whenever she was in Lucknow. Dayashanker was a waiter in this hotel. During one of her stays here, she roped in Dayashanker and also promised him a government job.

During interrogation, Dayashanker informed cops that Manju was in contact with several high profile people in Lucknow and was a regular visitor to the secretariat.
