HONOURARIUM OF ANGANWADI WORKERS RAISED

- HT Correspondent

CM Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday decided to increase the honorarium of anganwadi workers with effect from October 1, 2016. An official spokesman said the honourarium of anganwadi workers has been increased by `800 per month while that of mini-anganwadi workers and anganwadi assistants goes up by `750 per month and ` 400 per month respectively.

Commuters had a tough time passing through the Nishatganj-Sikandarbagh stretch on Wednesday as anganwadi workers, who were staging a sit-in on Laxman Mela ground hit the street.

The protest was going on for the past few days but late on Tuesday night, the agitating anganwadi workers came out on the road. The cops tried to convince them to go back but failed. The police then blocked movement on the entire stretch.

Parents who went to drop their wards to school were surprised to see barricading on both the sides – just after the bridge in Nishatganj and on the Sikandarbagh crossing. For the entire day the traffic movement was diverted to other roads and drivers had to take a longer detour to reach their destination. Later, the state government accepted their demands for wage revision and the agitation was called off. Though the exact demand was not met as per the anganwadi leaders, still the strike was called off and the protesters too moved away.

“We had demanded Rs 18,000 as stipend against the Rs 3,200 we get every month but the government raised the stipend only by Rs 800 to make it R 4,000 per month. We are not satisfied with the decision but to honour the government we have called off agitation,” said Neelam Pandey, general secretary of the UP Anganwadi Workers Association.

She said that the agitation would continue till the stipend was raised further. In the evening, majority of the protesting anganwadi workers were sent home.
