Vijay Mallya, the liquor baron who left the country after legal and financial troubles, tops the list of 130 accused against whom the UP Shia Central Waqf Board has lodged an FIR for allegedly illegally selling waqf (endowment) property. The pictures of the accused have now been made public on the UP Shia Central Waqf Board website which also mentions the action taken, including the fact that an FIR has been lodged in the matter. Nawab Kazim Ali Khan, the BSP MLA from Rampur, and Rahil Alam, brother of former waqf minister Shahjil Alam, also figure on the list for the same reason.

Urban development minister Azam Khan, who is also in-charge of Muslim waqf, has been locked in a long drawn battle with a section of the Shia clergy, because of his action against those who have grabbed or illegally sold waqf property. A property registered as waqf can neither be sold nor can its possession be transferred to any other person.

In February this year, the Shia Waqf Board had lodged an FIR against Vijay Mallya for allegedly selling a waqf property located in Abdullahpur village in Meerut. The board claims this property was registered under waqf board’s name in 1918. It was handed over to one Lala Hansraj from whom Mallya’s United Spirits acquired it.

“We have registered 350 cases so far under Section 52 of the Waqf Act proceedings against whom are still pending,” said an official of the board.
