In a gruesome incident, a woman lived with the skeletal remains of her mother in a house near Arjun Nagar crossing here for months together. Police arrived on the scene on Saturday, as neighbours complained of stench emanating from the house. They found the body of the woman and skeletal remains believed to be those of her mother.

The house is situated in the rear part of a sweet shop at Arjun Nagar crossing and has entry from back. It is owned by Virendra Singh, who lives in Kagarol. A widowed nurse lived in the house with her daughter who was a teacher in the past. Not much was known about both as they avoided the local residents.

For the past couple of days, the neighbours had been complaining of foul smell and suspected that the house had not been opened for days.

Police were called on Saturday as the stench became unbearable and on searching the house, they were shocked to find the skeletal remains of a human being beside the body identified as that of Veena Agarwal, aged about 55 years. “Those living nearby could not reveal much but it was learnt that Veena Agarwal was not in a proper frame of mind and had been living with the skeletal remains of her mother who must have died about five to six months ago,” said Neeraj Sharma, incharge of Shahganj police station. “Prima facie, it appears that Veena might have died two or three days ago, with no one to care for her. The body appeared to have been bitten by rats and was much decayed. Her mother worked as nurse but was not seen for the past six months,” he added.

“Forensic experts were called and the body was sent for post mortem examination. But it cannot be denied that Veena Agarwal was living with the remains of her mother believed to have died six months ago,” Sharma said.

There was no power connection in the house which was in a shabby condition. Cops were finding it difficult to probe the matter as there was no relative who could tell them about the nurse and her daughter.
