AIZAWL BEAT CHENNAI, REACH TOP OF ILEAGUE POINTS TABLE

- Press Trust of India sportsdesk@hindustantimes.com

Riding a 53rd minute goal by Brandon Vanlalremdika, Aizawl FC blanked Chennai FC 1-0 here on Saturday to reach the top of the points table.

The Khalid Jamil coached side that defeated East Bengal 1-0 in the same venue on February 20, are now top of the table with 23 points from 11 outings. They are followed by East Bengal (21 points from 10 matches) and Mohun Bagan (21 points from nine matches).

East Bengal have a better goal difference than Mohun Bagan.

The entire proceeding was dominated by the home side but they could have scored more given the opportunities that came Aizawl FC’s way.

The goal finally came in the second half when Bayi Kamo Stephane of Aizawl found Vanlalremdika unmarked in the box and fed him a perfect chip that he made no mistake in converting.

Despite conceding the goal, Chennai FC goalkeeper Karanjit Singh had a fairly good day. He cleared a header from defender Zohmingliana Ralte in the 17th minute and also saved a shot by Md Al Amna later.

Chennai got very few chances to make a mark. Chennai’s Charles Desuza, set up by Denson Devdas, reached almost near the box in one of the raids but was blocked by an Aizawl defender.

CHURCHILL FACE SHIVAJIANS

VASCO: Lying at the bottom of the heap, local giants Churchill Brothers have their task cut out as they take on DSK Shivajians in the 11th round encounter here on Sunday.

For Churchill, it is a challenge to come out all guns blazing after a heart-breaking loss against minnows Minerva Punjab 4-5 in a nine-goal thriller during the last round.

They are currently last in the league table with only six points from 10 games. For DSK Shivajians, it has been a rooler coaster ride as they have 10 points from as many matches. They are placed sixth in the table.
