AMU campus hots up post clash between students

- PRADEEP SAXENA

A clash between two student groups and subsequent interference by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad ( ABVP ) and Aligarh City MLA Anil Parashar triggered tension on the Aligarh Muslim University campus on Friday. The ABVP alleged that students of a particular religion were being harassed.

However, the AMU Students Union (AMUSU) has appealed that no one should try to communalise a small personal confrontation between students. The AMUSU also organised a peace march to protest the ‘uncalled for’ interference by those with vested interests and appealed to students to maintain peace, law and order on the campus.

SP (city ) Atul Sriwastava said, “District, civil and police administration are keeping a close watch after the incident. An FIR has been registered and investigations are on. The accused will not be spared and stern action will be taken against them.” Reports said Mohit, Tanveer , Jai and some other students of BSc were physically assaultedbysomemiscreantson Thursday. Mohit received serious head injuries, resulting in 7-8 stitches. The ABVP men started a sit-in at the SSP office, demanding action against the accused. Soon afterwards, Aligarh City MLA Sanjiv Raja and Koil MLA (BJP) also joined them. Mohit said some people attacked him as he did not invite them to a farewell party. An FIR has been registered with Civil Lines police on behalf of Mohit and other injured students against Asif, Abdulla, Faraz and Ashfaq. Mohit has named his friends Mohd Danish and Manzoor as witnesses in his FIR. AMUSU secretary Nabi-ul-Usmani told HT, “This is an internal matter of AMU students but some outsiders are trying to escalate it.” AMUSU vice president Nadim Ansari said , “We are with Mohit but why is ABVP communalising the incident ? I appeal to everybody to not turn AMU campus into a political arena.”

Aligarh City MLA Sanjiv Raj said, “We have only extended our moral support to students. Action should betaken against the culprits. If no action is taken, we may raise the matter at other forums.” AMU proctor Prof M Mohsan Khan said, “A physical fight took place between students. Mohit had received head injuries but is out of danger now. Show cause notices have been issued to the accused students. Appropriate action will be taken against them.”
