GORAKHPUR: Chief minister Aditya Nath Yogi on Saturday vowed to improve the law and order situation in the state.

Addressing a felicitation function here, Aditya Nath said, “after I took over the rein of the state I received phone calls, letters and memoranda from girls and women regarding harassment and eve-teasing at public places. Anti-Romeo squads had been activated to take action against the anti-social elements. The people who harass girls are not youths but ruffians who are required to be dealt with strictly.”

The state government is facing flak from rival political parties and social organisations over the action by police against innocent couples too.

Aditya Nath made it clear that police will not take action against the girls and boys moving together with mutual consent. “There will be no moral policing,” he said. Yogi supporters were heard raising slogans like: “UP mein rahna hain to Yogi-Yogi kehna hain.”

Yogi said action against the slaughter houses had been taken on the recommendation of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

Yogi, the five-time MP of Gorakhpur, said: “When I became MP in 1998, Gorakhpur was termed the crime zone of UP. Bomb blast, murder, loot and dacoity were the order of the day. The mafiosi and criminals ruled the roost. I took assistance of various communities to launch drive against the criminal gangs. The area that was called laboratory of criminals is moving fast on the path of development.”

He said to end regional imbalance, PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of AIIMS and a fertilizer factory. “If one of the most backward regions of UP has become developed, then why cannot UP became a developed state. There is need of willpower and a government that can deliver,” he said.

In his 40-minute speech Yogi hailed Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah for the grand victory of the party in the UP election.
