DINOS AROUND THE WORLD
More than 1,000 dinosaur species have been identified globally, most in the northern hemisphere.
Well-known species include the 13-metre Tyrannosaurus Rex and the turkey-sized Velociraptor. European dinos include the 10-metre Iguanodon. But the largest species, Argentinosaurus, from South America, was 39.7 metres long.
India’s dinosaurs tend to be smaller and have more in common with those from Australia, Madagascar and South America.
Only 20-odd Indian species have been recognised. South America’s count is well over 120. Even China boasts close to 60.
Scientists believe improved research, data sharing and better identification systems will help undercover more prehistoric treasures that lie just under India’s surface.
