AMOS YEE
Singapore teen jailed for insulting former PM Lee Kuan Yew granted political asylum in US
1 Yee was jailed for four weeks in 2015 after he shocked the country by posting an expletive-laden video attacking Lee after the founding prime minister’s death
2 He was sent to prison for hurting the religious feelings of Christians and posting an obscene image. He was jailed again in 2016 for insulting Muslims and Christians in a series of videos posted online, but critics say the real reason was to silence him
3 On Saturday, Singapore’s home affairs ministry said Yee had engaged in “hate speech” but noted such rhetoric is allowed in the US. “It is the prerogative of the US to take in such people,” it said.
