Many officials hurt as inmates of Fatehgarh jail indulge in violence
The Fatehgarh jail superintendent and many other officials were injured on Sunday after prisoners protesting against poor health services indulged in violence in the jail that falls in Farrukhabad district. The inmates also alleged extortion by jail doctor Neeraj and jailor Dharampal Singh, said reports.
While the jail doctor has been removed, the jailor has been placed under suspension.
Sources said the inmates managed to breach the multi-layered security and assumed control of the prison. The agitated inmates also set off the prison hospital on fire and attacked the guards with bricks and utensils.
They also repelled all the efforts going on to gain the control back from them.
Those injured included chief development officer and officiating collector Narendra Prasad Pandey, jail superintendent Rajesh Verma. The prison guards and some of the inmates have been admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital of the district.
The jail doctor, the inmates alleged, refused to give medicines to them and instead used to sell them off in the black market. SP Subhash Singh Baghel, who faced hostile inmates throwing utensils at him, was trying to pacify them till reports were filed. DIG jail Rajendra Pratap was leading the operations to bring the situation under control, the police officials said.
