LUCKNOW: Feeling intimidated to enter a police station to drop a complaint letter in the ‘shikayat petika’ (complaint box)? Hold on! You need not be frightened any more.

Public places like banks, bus stations and post offices, among others, in 11 districts under Lucknow zone, would have these complaint boxes from next week.

Inspector general of police, Lucknow zone, A Satish Ganesh, has issued instructions to district police chiefs of the 11 districts to put up complaint boxes at public places where people can just walk-in and drop their complaints without feeling intimidated.

“Every police station has a complaint box. But people generally feel scared entering a police station to drop a complaint in the complaint box,” Ganesh told HT. “So, we have decided to put up these complaint boxes at public places,” he said.

There are 246 police stations in the Lucknow zone. In each police station area, there would be two such complaint boxes at public places, taking the total figure to 492 boxes.

To make the entire effort more effective, a cop of the rank of circle officer would open these boxes once a week. All the complaint letters would be sorted out and would be disposed of according to its nature.

“The circle officer will address these complaints accordingly, in a time-bound manner,” said Ganesh.

This novel initiative would not only help people put their complaints in the complaint boxes, but would also improve the image of the UP Police and make it more public friendly. An initiative of Lucknow zone of UP Police, it is likely to be implemented in other parts of the state after analysing public response. All the 246 police stations would also undergo another change within a week. They would have a mandatory welcome board at the entrance with ‘Aap Ka Swagat hai’ written over it. Ganesh has issued directives to all district police chiefs to put up these boards within a week.
