LUCKNOW: Cops arrested one Atif and his elder brother Firoz from Barabanki bus station on Monday on charges of beating a calf to death in Mughalsarai locality in Saadatganj on Sunday.

The duo was sent to jail after being presented in court.

As news about the their arrest spread in the area, a large number of people reached Saadatganj police station, where the accused were brought for interrogation.

Some people tried to enter the police station to ‘interrogate’ the brothers, but cops foiled their attempt.

However, as a precautionary measure, cops shifted the brothers to another police station.

The police succeeded in locating the brothers after putting their cell phones on surveillance.

Atif denied killing the calf deliberately.

During interrogation, he told cops that in a bid to save his child from the calf, he hit the bovine with a bamboo log.

To recall, tension gripped Old City on Sunday afternoon, after Atif and Firoz allegedly killed the calf.

After the incident, hundreds of volunteers of Hindu outfits had gathered in the minority-dominated Mughalsarai locality in Saadatganj, in protest against the incident.

All shops and commercial establishments had pulled down their shutters. A large contingent of police force was deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident.

The situation returned to normal and commercial activity resumed in the area on Monday.

However, a large contingent of police force remained stationed there as a precautionary measure.

After the incident on Sunday, a large number of people had also pelted the LDA colony residence of MLA Suresh Srivastava with stones, demanding that he accompany them to the spot where the calf was killed.

Alok Singh, CO, Bazarkhala lodged an FIR against the brothers under Section 429 of the Indian Penal Code for causing mischief by killing or maiming cattle and Section 11 of Prevention of Cruelty To Animals Act.
