IIT-K ex-prof, wife found ‘locked’ in room since 4 mths

KANPUR: A former faculty member of Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) and his wife were found unconscious inside their house, here on Tuesday.

Sanjeev Dayal and Vidya Dayal had reportedly imprisoned themselves for last four months.

While they reportedly spoke to electrician four times during the duration, they never opened the door on his arrival, said police. Unbearable stench from the flat alarmed the neighbours and they informed the police last night, which broke open the door.

The scene inside was horrifying. The couple was found living with mounds of human excreta in both the rooms. The beard of the professor, who apparently hadn’t shaved for months, had grown so much that it touched his belly.

The Kalyanpur police said it was trying to ascertain if the couple had any psychiatric condition and acted under severe spell of depression.

The circumstantial evidences revealed that the couple had blocked the passage of the toilet by putting a heavy wooden plank and did not use it for several days. The couple attended the nature’s call only in the rooms where they were found lying separately.

The police admitted the couple to the LLR hospital where doctors said the duo are in critical state. “Though hearts beats and pulse rate were irregular, 24 hours were highly critical for the couple,” said a doctor. Dr JS Kushwaha, under whom the couple has been admitted, said that it appeared that both of them did not take meals for several days. He suspected them to be patients of depression. Sanjeev, 50, is a former IIT-K teacher and till recently was running engineering coaching. His wife Vidya was a teacher at the CSA University on contractual basis. The couple had no children and they lived all alone in the flat number 602 of Twin Towers in Sharda Nagar under Kalyanpur police station.

Police found CCTV cameras in all the rooms of the flat and has taken the cameras and the footages in its custody. Sanjeev was found fully dressed but the wife was lying nude under the bed in her room amidst excreta.

Police which contacted neighbours, family members and close friends, said none could give any reason behind the couple’s state of affairs. According to neighbours, the couple was introvert and seldom interacted with others living in the same building.

For the past four months the couple did not talk to anyone. None of the residents could dare to ask about their welfare due to their irritable nature.
