A cancer patient allegedly immolated herself along with her three-year-old daughter in Bhawanipur village of Pilibhit on Tuesday.

One Ranjit Kaur, 40, who was apparently depressed due to her ailment, poured kerosene oil on herself and her daughter Sahaj Kaur and took the extreme step, said Devranjan Verma, SP, Pilibhit.

The woman’s 12-year-old son alerted neighbours who tried to save her but in vain. Ranjit succumbed to her injuries on the spot. The neighbours took the girl to the hospital, where she was declared brought dead by doctors.

Police registered a complaint and initiated investigation into the case.

Ranjit was diagnosed with last stage of abdominal cancer in November and was undergoing chemotherapy treatment at SGPGI, Lucknow. “After coming to know that she had cancer, Ranjit stopped talking to neighbours. She used to worry a lot about the future of her family,” said Gurvinder Singh, a close relative of the deceased.

Lakhwinder Singh, Ranjit’s husband is employed in Bahrain. According to relatives, he took up the job to bear the cost of cancer treatment.

“The family had to sell their property and Ranjit’s jewellery to pay her medical bills,” said Gurvinder.

Meanwhile, police have informed Lakhwinder about the incident and registered a complaint regarding the matter.

“We are waiting for the postmortem report to submit the final report in the matter. If the post-mortem report is clean, we will hand over the body and close the case,” said the SP.
