Food for patients in the King George’s Medical University will soon be cooked using solar power.

The project is in progress and about 80% of the work is complete. With the launch of the project, food for over 3,000 patients will be cooked in the solar kitchen in Shatabdi Phase II hospital.

The capacity will increase in a few days and cross 4,000 , the number of beds KGMU has for admission of patients in different departments.

Rice, vegetable and cereals will be cooked in the solar kitchen while roti will continue to be made in the new roti maker installed a few months ago and which has the capacity to make 950 rotis per hour.

“Solar energy is in abundance in this part of the state, hence there will be no hassles in cooking food for patients regularly,” said Prof Ravi Kant, vice chancellor, King George’s Medical University.

On Monday , the project was inspected . As per the plan, the new kitchen is being set up on the seventh floor in Shatabdi Phase-II building, opposite Lari Cardiology and has equipment that runs on solar power.

The solar power will be generated from the rooftop parabola and the equipment inside the kitchen will generate steam for cooking.

The entire kitchen is being scientifically developed to maintain high standards of hygiene and nutrition. Food cooked here will be in accordance with the nutritional needs of the patients.

Out of the 30 parabola that generate energy for cooking, 28 have been installed and the remaining two will be in place in a few days.

The kitchen has two jacketed cooking containers which can keep food warm for a very long time. This will help serve nutritious food unto the last patient.

The service from this kitchen is likely to start in 15 days, depending on the success of the trial run.
