Now, couples can register their marriage online with Aadhaar

LUCKNOW: Couples wanting to get their marriage registered under the Hindu Marriage Act can now also do it online. But to avail the facility, they must have their Aadhaar card and either the bride or groom should be of Indian origin.

UP’s stamp and registration department has uploaded the link (a gateway to the registration facility) on its official website —igrsup.gov.in.

On clicking the link, which is marked in red under the ‘new’ category, the user would be taken to another page having two sections — one for existing applicants and the other for fresh applicants who would be asked to upload their details and relevant documents.

Officials said once the documents are uploaded, the couple would be allotted a unique number that would be used for future references.

“The documents submitted will be checked at the sub-registrar level. If approved, the couple will be asked to pay the fees online.

The entire process will take almost a month. Users can keep tab over the status of their application using the unique code provided earlier,” said an officer with the stamp and registration department.

He said it was in 2015, when the trial for online registration of marriages was first conducted in Barabanki. The initiative was said to be launched to make the entire process more transparent and easy. Then, Mehtaab Singh and Rameshwari Devi became the first couple to register their marriage online at the Sadar sub-registrar office in Barabanki. However, following technical hassles, the facility could be made available early this year.
